Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is designed to guide you and your partner to rekindle emotional bonds, fostering a connection that transcends the everyday. It provides a safe space for open, honest dialogue, breaks down communication barriers, and helps you express your deepest feelings. EFT also helps navigate past hurts, build trust, and create a secure emotional foundation that allows your relationship to flourish.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a therapeutic approach primarily used in couples therapy but also applied in individual therapy. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT is rooted in attachment theory, which suggests that humans have an innate need for close emotional bonds with others.

EFT focuses on the emotional experiences of individuals and how these emotions influence their interactions and relationships. The therapy aims to create a secure emotional bond between partners by helping them understand and express their emotions more effectively.

Key principles of EFT include:

Identifying patterns: EFT helps couples recognize negative patterns of interaction, such as withdrawal or criticism, that lead to conflict or distance.

Emotional awareness: Clients learn to identify and articulate their emotions and underlying needs, as well as recognize their partner’s emotions.

Restructuring interactions: Therapists guide couples in restructuring their interactions to create more secure emotional connections. This may involve expressing needs more clearly, offering support, and responding to each other with empathy.

Creating secure attachment: EFT aims to create a secure attachment bond between partners, characterized by trust, emotional openness, and mutual support.

Overall, EFT seeks to promote emotional intimacy and connection within relationships by helping partners understand and respond to each other’s emotional needs more effectively.

The duration of couple therapy can vary greatly depending on the specific issues being addressed, the willingness of both partners to engage in the process, the skills of the therapist, and other factors. Some couples may see improvement in just a few sessions, while others may require several months or even years of therapy to achieve their goals.

In general, short-term couple therapy may last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. It focuses on specific issues and provides tools for communication and problem-solving. Longer-term therapy may be necessary for deeper-rooted issues or if there are significant emotional wounds to heal.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of couple therapy depends on the dedication and effort both partners are willing to put into the process and on the compatibility between the couple and the therapist.
